Windows 7 FAQ

Q: Can I upgrade my computer to Windows 7 from Vista or XP?
A: You can upgrade easily from Vista but not so from XP. If your computer is too old, it might not have compatible hardware. You should check the HCL from Microsoft to see about your hardware. Otherwise if your computer hardware is ok then you will need to do a clean install. Back-up your data on your hard drive first and then follow the directions on the install DVD.

Q: What are the requirements for Windows 7?

A: The hardware required is:

1 GHz Processor or Better

1 GB of RAM or Better (2-4 GB is best)

16 GB hard disk space available

As always, more of any of these is best when working with a Windows computer.

Q: Can I finally turn off the UAC (user account control)?
A: Yes! But Windows 7 gives you more control over the UAC besides just on or off as in Vista. This time there are two mid levels for the UAC. One to tell you only when software is trying make a change to your computer and one to notify you only of major system changes. As always, its best to run at full security but it can be quite annoying if you install new or upgraded software a lot.

Q: What about the system tray?
A: The system try always seems to fill up with annoying application icons that tell you meaningless things throughout the day. Windows 7 lets you block icons from setting up in the system tray and allows you to hide the really annoying alerts.

Q: What is the difference between Save and Save As?
A: Use SAVE when you are revising an existing document.Use SAVE AS when you are creating a new document from scratch or an existing document. This will keep the original document untouched in its original format and create a new document with a new name.
